Topic: Factors to need for water harvesting in rural and urban India : Elucidate!

The rainfall is generally irregular and uncertain in India. For irrigational work it is primarily in those pockets of India which remain prone to draught by erratic and irregular precipitation. Moreover, most of the rainfall occurs in two or three months of monsoon while rest time of the year remains dry or with less rainfall. Rain water should be stored in ponds and tanks. Water harvesting can fulfill various purposes in India in such climatic conditions.

For potable purpose it is mainly in dry land area. It should be managed to ward off drinking water problem in both the rural and urban areas. In rural areas, agricultural lands where water will require for irrigational purposes but no perennial river exist, the rain water can be stored by check dams in ponds or tanks.

Stabilized water can be percolated to recharge the ground water level and make it rise high. Ground water is saturated and stable water develops tendency of movement. It should be checked. Flowing water erodes soil cover of earth and depositing the silt into rivers and seas. Checking water flow and harvesting them at some distances slow the speed and losses the power of erosion.
