Non-cooperation Movement was launched by the Indian National congress which brought Gandhi as the most influential leader of Indian politics. Special congress session at Calcutta accepts proposal of Non-cooperation with the unjust government. Through Non-cooperation movement congress hoped to paralyze the functioning of civil administration of the unjust foreign government by withdrawing all cooperation from it.

Gandhi's saintly figure and charismatic personality won many followers. During NCM, Gandhi won over the Muslims for Non-cooperation. This movement brought out rural common people in the national movement. Congress became a movement of the masses; peasants in villages, workers in cities, women, and students also joined the NCM. Henceforth, all classes of Indian society started to take part in national movement. The Khilafat committee and the congress agreed to launch a non-cooperation movement untedely against British. It means their was a unity between Hindu and Muslims.

Vastness of objectives and simplicity of movement gave chance to all classes to participate. NCM gave a new unity of purpose like National flag-tricolor, National dress-khadi, National slogan-swaraj, National language-Hindi. The terror of British administration disappeared. People geared up for all sorts of sacrifices, For swaraj. This movement expanded goal of congress from 'dominion status' to swaraj'.
Therefore, a new energy and direction was given to the Indian national movement by this Non-cooperation Movement.
