Compensating the loss and rehabilitating public and property affected by the disaster, whether man-made or natural is called Disaster Management. Preventive steps in the direction to make such preparations and take such precautions that minimum loss is sustained due to the disaster is also comes under Disaster Management (DM).

Various natural disasters and steps to tackle them can be enumerated as under:

Earthquakes: A plan with sophisticated instruments for seismological observation needed. Real time data acquisition from remote areas is essential for National Early Warning System. Apart from these quake proof houses or shelters should be developed, which can be availed by poor people also. For this it should be economical.

Flood: Over flow of water causing loss of life and property are both natural and anthropogenic. The flood forecasting stations can be established to get prior warning. First such station was established in 1959. Now about 157 stations are there in the country.

Drought: The Drought Relief Management has been greatly helped by remove sensing techniques. Early warning of drought conditions will help to undertake contingency measures.

Cyclones: Using satellites like IRS and INSATs, mapping and monitoring should be done and areas evacuated prior to coming of cyclone.
